Star Wars Battlefront 2 had its support cut in the middle of its resurgence, but its comeback shows there's still potential for a third game.

Star Wars Battlefront III is the canceled sequel to Star Wars Battlefront II, which had a rough start on launch, but its truncated post-release support shows there's still more the series can offer. With a concerted effort from DICE, Battlefront 2 has become a great way to be immersed in the universe that the Star Wars franchise is known for. The belated success of Battlefront 2 made the prospects of a third game promising. Unfortunately, the Battlefront reboot series appears to be on indefinite hiatus, despite the potential it still has to deliver a compelling first-person shooter experience.

When Star Wars Battlefront II first launched, it had various pay-to-win features like loot boxes, which were detrimental to the franchise and brand as a whole. Unfortunately, because of the Battlefront 2 loot box disaster, many players quit the game shortly after it launched. The disastrous launch and predatory microtransactions became a major component in an ongoing saga that's seen many countries introduce legislation to regulate loot box mechanics as a form of gambling. However, EA and DICE have since updated Battlefront 2 to make loot boxes contain cosmetic items only. With this issue now fixed, 2022 is the best year to get into Battlefront 2.

DICE's next game, Battlefield 2042, released in a rocky state similar to the likes of Battlefront 2, but with other underlining issues. It was bug ridden, able to be exploited, and had connectivity issues even with decent hardware and internet connectivity. Because of this, EA started to divert assets and attention from other projects to help focus on Battlefield 2042, and the future of the Battlefield franchise in general. Due to Battlefield 2042's franchise-worst release, many players have become disillusioned with the abilities of DICE and EA. One such project that the company abandoned, due to licensing costs as well as the re-focused effort on Battlefield, was Star Wars Battlefront 3.

Electronic Arts has an ongoing exclusivity license with Disney and Lucasfilm that is set to expire in 2023. With the agreement ending soon, it has allowed other companies to develop video game projects within the Star Wars universe. This brings hope for the possible development of Battlefront 3, which still has a lot to offer if it were ever resurrected. Especially considering all the cut content from Battlefront 2, there is a plethora of conflicts and characters to explore in the first-person shooter series. For now, it would appear EA has placed its Star Wars FPS hopes in the hands of Respawn Entertainment, which is currently working on an untitled shooter in the iconic universe. Respawn's experience with Titanfall and Apex Legends may have been persuasive in EA's decision to press DICE into its heavy focus on Battlefield.

The Battlefront series, however, could still benefit from another sequel, and the brand recognition alone makes it an enticing project. It is certainly not out of the realm of possibility to see the series make a comeback - it's already done it once with Battlefront 2. The game was utterly lambasted upon its release, but is currently in a more than respectable state. Cutting support in the midst of Battlefront 2's resurgence and shelving Battlefront 3 is the worst Star Wars mistake EA made during its tenure as the exclusive license holder. It is not too late for Star Wars Battlefront III, but it does not appear to be on EA and DICE's agenda at this time.
